3 Minute Empowerment/Motivational Interviewing


Get out to the event early and make the most of your time! Attend this pre-conference workshop which is included as part of your regular registration fee. 3 Minute Empowerment/Motivational Interviewing is a clinical practice tool facilitating the mentorship of patients in modifying behavior. The tool is universally applicable to any behavior change, is formatted to fit in a realistic short time, and can be used by any healthcare professional.

Healthcare professionals who actively participate in this program report they are better able to:
  • Engage in effective partnerships with their patients to support positive behaviour changes
  • Perform rapid assessments of their patients’ readiness for change
  • Help patients to increase motivation and overcome barriers to change
  • Use practical and efficient strategies, given the significant time constraints of clinical practice

1. COPD – Testing Evidence-Based Care Pathways

Chronic disease takes an enormous toll on an individual’s health and quality of life and has significant impact on health care expenditures. Effective strategies are required to prevent illness and avoid serious complications from disease. This session will summarize the COPD pilot project underway in PEI as part of the Health PEI Integrated Chronic Disease Prevention and Management Project, to prevent chronic disease, help support patients to successfully manage their illness, and improve outcomes.

2. Mental Health and Aging: Alzheimer’s Disease & Community Resources for the Aging

A.
The Rising Tide

You will learn about the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and its impact on our society. Dr. Cruz will also briefly describe current treatments available and measures that can ameliorate or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

B.
Understanding the Options

An overview of health care and community resources for the older person. Helping patients/clients to transition from hospital to community.

3. Craving Change
Explore this psycho-educational program that is designed to help people who struggle with their relationship with food and their eating behaviour. The program was developed by Wendy Shah, RD and Dr. Colleen Cannon, Ph.D., R. Psych. and offers tools, skills and confidence to help clients change their eating habits.

4. Computer Assisted Therapy for Addictions
You will learn about the results of a study that assessed whether computer-assisted therapy was effective in getting and keeping people in addiction treatment, in reducing the participants’ use of alcohol and drugs of abuse, and in improving the participants' overall health. Six month follow up outcome data will be presented.

5. Nova Scotia ANCHOR Project Update

ANCHOR (A Novel Approach to Cardiovascular Health By Optimizing Risk Management) is a study that assessed the impact of screening for cardiovascular risk factors and applying a behavioral and pharmacological intervention via an interdisciplinary team to reduce the 10 year risk of a coronary. This session is a follow up to a presentation given at a previous Atlantic Chronic Disease Congress and will share the study results; highlight the elements of the model that are portable to the health system at large; and discuss two additional studies: one that is exploring the minimal intervention required to maintain clinical success, and a second that is evaluating the impact of an intensive intervention for those who did not achieve a clinical success in the original study.

We will explore the experience of mindfulness with mindful breathing for stress reduction, a brief body scan relaxation, sitting meditation, and heart-fullness/loving kindness meditation. We will then close with time for questions and discussions of the many wide-ranging clinical applications.

This interactive session will highlight the many benefits of the practice of Taoist Tai Chi Internal Arts of Health on the physical, mental and spiritual dimensions of our being. Through a brief presentation and demonstration by the Moncton members, you will learn about Taoist Tai Chi, where it comes from, where it is practiced in the region and throughout the world. You will also have the opportunity to learn and practice some of the movements.

We will begin with a presentation of mindfulness-based stress reduction as a paradigm changing approach to chronic disease and mental health that breaks out of a pathology model into one founded in wholeness, basic healthiness and islands of clarity. The essential importance of addressing stress for all chronic diseases including mental health will be covered as well as the body mind spirit connection for healing into wholeness. We will then explore the experience of mindfulness, the power of breath for developing stress hardiness, sitting meditation, and loving kindness meditations for healing. We will then engage in discussions to explore how mindful presence in the here and now is healing for both patients and healthcare practitioners.

Integrating Mental Health Care into Primary Health Care

Participants will learn about a pilot program striving to address the mental health needs of a specific rural region in New Brunswick using an innovative needs driven, competencies based mental health care delivery framework embedded in currently available primary health care services. The goal is to better meet the needs of the population by moving from a vertical to a horizontal model of mental health delivery through enhancing the capacity of every primary health care provider to effect mental health care interventions appropriate to their role and within their scope of practice.

This session will look at a Pain Self-Management program for patients developed by Psychologist Dr. Brenda Durdle and Physiotherapist Belinda Beaton as part of their multi-disciplinary team approach to the management and treatment of chronic pain at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. The session will examine the highlights of the program, the program’s development, and some preliminary outcome data.
